ALIA administers professional liability claims and manages the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Exchange (ALIEX), ALIA’s primary re-insurer providing coverage if claims exceed single occurrence and aggregate limits. This includes the examination and review of claims, hiring of external lawyers to litigate claims and settlement of claims when required.
If you are an Alberta lawyer in private practice, you must purchase mandatory insurance coverage through ALIA. Excess coverage is voluntary and is available through the Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association.
As a condition of your insurance policy, you are required to report any claim or potential claim against you to ALIA as soon as you become aware of it. Failure to report a claim or potential claim prior to the June 30 deadline of the policy period in which you become aware of it will result in denied coverage. If you do become aware of a claim or potential claim, please submit an Insurance Claim Report.
