As a participant in Mentor Express, I agree that:

1. Mentors participate in this program solely to help me develop a better law practice and become a better lawyer, and not to provide me with legal or professional advice. I will not raise questions of substantive law with them or seek guidance about particular client matters. I will not rely on our discussions as a substitute for my own professional judgment or my professional responsibilities.

2. Neither the Law Society of Alberta nor any mentor warrants that any information shared with me is suitable for any area of my practice.

3. I will not use mentoring sessions to apply for jobs with my mentors or their organizations.

4. Mentoring does not create a privileged relationship between mentor and mentee. Communications with mentors are not protected by solicitor-client privilege. I will nonetheless maintain the strictest confidence about any personal information my mentors share about themselves or past experiences. I will not disclose our discussions without their clear permission.

5. Mentors may share information about me with the Law Society to provide me with additional support for my professionalism and conduct as a lawyer. Mentors are obligated to report serious ethical violations concerning a lawyer’s violation of the Code of Professional Conduct that raise a substantial question about the lawyer’s honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer.

6. There is no guarantee that the mentors I prefer to be matched with will be available.

7. I will only contact those mentors with whom I book sessions via the Mentor Express platform. I am not permitted to contact any other mentors who appear in the mentor gallery.

8. After I book a meeting with a mentor, I will promptly reach out to them to outline any areas I hope to discuss with them and confirm the dates, times and place of the meetings.

9. I will make the necessary time commitment to prepare for my meetings with my mentors. If I cannot, I will contact the program administrator and my mentors as soon as possible and withdraw from the program.

10. Mentors sometimes have to cancel or reschedule meetings after they have been booked.

11. I agree that in no event will I sue or otherwise attempt to hold liable for damages, the Law Society of Alberta, or any mentors in the Law Society’s mentorship programs, as a result of my participation in this program.
