As a mentor in the Law Society of Alberta’s mentorship programs, I agree that:
1. The Law Society uses a third party company, Mentorship Rocket, to host and facilitate our mentorship programs. Mentorship Rocket will have access to your personal information including your name, email address and mentor/mentee profile information to perform program-related tasks on our behalf. Mentorship Rocket is obligated not to disclose or use your personal information for any other purpose. Mentorship Rocket has their own
Privacy Policy. The Law Society does not assume any liability or responsibility for the content and activities of their
website.
2. To be effective as a mentor, lawyers should
a) value teaching and counseling new lawyers in the development of professional habits,
b) strive to improve the legal profession through their mentorship, and
c) possess interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate quality discussions about the best practices and highest values of the legal profession.
I believe I have these attributes as well as a reputation among peers in the local community for competence and ethical and professional conduct.
3. To participate in Mentor Express or Mentor Connect, I confirm that I have practised for at least five years.
4. To participate in the Indigenous Mentorship Program, I confirm that:
a) I have practised for at least three years. I understand that I may ask for a relaxation of this requirement if I do not meet this precondition.
b) I identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis.
5. I have never been suspended for disciplinary reasons, disbarred from the practice of law or resigned in the face of discipline, by any law society or bar association in any jurisdiction. I have no formal disciplinary complaints pending. I will inform the program administrator immediately if any of these have occurred or occur while I am participating in the Law Society’s mentorship programs.
6. The Law Society can check my disciplinary history to confirm that I am eligible to serve as a mentor in its mentorship programs. These checks will include the following:
a) A review of my membership and disciplinary records.
b) Enquiries with other law societies and bar associations where I am or was previously a member. I authorize those organizations to provide the Law Society with full information about my membership including reports they have prepared on my practice, information respecting complaints, restrictions on my practice, and any disciplinary proceedings taken against me.
7. I will not sue the Law Society, its staff or any other participants in the Law Society’s mentorship programs, or otherwise attempt to hold them liable for damages, in connection with my application to serve as a mentor or my participation in those programs.
8. Any guidance I provide to mentees is solely to support them in developing their skills and confidence as a legal professional, and is not intended as legal advice to them or their clients. Mentees should rely on their own professional judgment in conducting their legal practices.
9. Mentoring does not create a privileged relationship between mentor and mentee. Communications with mentees are not protected by solicitor-client privilege. I will nonetheless maintain the strictest confidence about any personal information my mentees share about themselves or past experiences. I will not disclose our discussions without their express permission. I will keep confidential the identity of any mentees and the existence of the mentoring relationships, and will not disclose either without that mentee's express consent.
10. Mentees may request meetings with me in accordance with their own preferences based on the profile I post for myself on the Mentorship platform. I understand the Law Society does not match mentors and mentees and that there is no guarantee that mentees will request any meetings with me.
11. I will make the necessary time commitment to prepare for and attend my meetings with mentees. If I cannot, I will contact my mentees as soon as possible if I need to reschedule a meeting.
12. If I need to withdraw from the program, I will let my mentee(s) and the program administrator know as soon as possible.
The information submitted here is complete to the best of my knowledge.
