Join Assist for Hand-to-Hand, as their keynote speaker Michael Bryant shares his journey facing criminal charges arising from a motor vehicle fatality, maintaining resilience and finding hope.
Michael Bryant, Canadian lawyer, former Attorney General of Ontario and author, will share insights on overcoming personal and professional challenges building on his book, 28 Seconds: A True Story of Addiction, Tragedy and Hope. Michael faced criminal charges relating to a motor vehicle fatality and effectively had to rebut a presumption of guilt given his close connection to the justice system. Enjoy a delightful dinner, signature mocktails and an opportunity to connect with colleagues in a supportive and inspirational environment. Edmonton artist Gisele Denis will create a painting at this event which will then be auctioned to raised additional funds for Assist.

This webinar will explore areas of law that commonly require business valuations, and will further provide business valuation considerations that are unique to those specific areas of law.
Understanding the rights, responsibilities, and considerations of birthparents in the adoption process is important for providing accurate and informed legal advice. This webinar will explore key aspects of adoptions and birthparents’ rights, and will examine developments in the area with a focus on a recent Alberta Court of Appeal decision, Re A. (Adoption), 2024 ABCA 203.

New and upcoming Alberta lawyers are invited to join representatives from partner organizations in Alberta’s legal community as we roll out the welcome mat. The Law Society of Alberta, the Alberta Lawyers’ Assistance Society, the Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association, the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch and the Legal Education Society of Alberta are collaborating to present some helpful information and answer questions.
These lunchtime events are free of charge and will feature presentations to help you get a better understanding of what our organizations offer and how to access the different supports available. Let us take some of the guesswork away from your early days of practice and introduce you to a wide variety of resources.

Lunch/presentations will take place from noon – 1 p.m. Representatives from the different organizations will be available for an additional half an hour following the presentations for any questions and networking.
Lunch and refreshments will be served. Please indicate any dietary restrictions you may have upon registration. We will do our best to accommodate dietary requests but since this is a pizza buffet lunch, options may be limited. Food items will be marked with their dietary allergens.

The Law Society of Alberta will be hosting an in-person Table Talk group mentoring session in Calgary on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 12:15 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. The topic of this Table Talk is Immigration Law.
Discussion will focus on substantive issues that arise in immigration practice. Attendees will be divided into small groups led by experienced immigration law practitioners who will provide valuable advice and insight into some of the unique issues arising within this practice area.
The purpose of the these events is to bring together mentors and mentees from our Mentor Connect and Mentor Express programs to network and discuss important topics that affect lawyers. Each event features a specific discussion theme with mentors leading informal conversations among small groups of mentees. Mentees are encouraged to raise questions and actively participate in the discussion.
There will be an opportunity for attendees to network from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for those who are able to stay afterwards. Lunch will be provided and the event is free of charge.
Attendance is limited and spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
