Law Society of Alberta Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that we live and work on land where Indigenous peoples have lived since time immemorial and we are honoured to share this land with them. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude.
Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #27
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #27 states the following:
“We call upon the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure that lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.”
In 2021, the Law Society responded to this Call to Action by developing and rolling out Indigenous cultural competency education called The Path.
Reconciliation Advisory Roster
From time to time, the Law Society has work that is directly related to Call to Action #27. The Law Society has established a Reconciliation Advisory Roster (the Roster) to help with this work. As the need arises, the Roster provides guidance, feedback and suggestions on Law Society programs, issues and resources.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Roster, please fill out the sign-up form. Those who sign-up will be contacted by the Law Society to confirm their participation and may be asked additional questions. Roster members will be canvassed for availability as opportunities arise.
