From Paper to Progress: The Role of Legal Professionals in a Modern Land Registry
Via Webinar | February 17, 2026
The University of Alberta Faculty of Law, AI4Society and the Digital Law & Innovation Society invite you to participate in the Digital Law Forum. The Digital Law Forum brings together law, technology, and governance reform experts for an interdisciplinary look at legal liability, regulation and the reform of public institutions in a digital age. The forum will also explore who might be responsible for risks and harms introduced by AI, what opportunities digital technologies present for public benefit, and what role academics and practitioners might play in advancing justice in a digital age.
The Digital Law Forum is running four sessions between Feb. 24 and March 3:
No registration is required for the first three events and all can be accessed from this Zoom link, however, registration is required for the AI, Law & Governance Challenges in Focus: Regulating Critical Digital Infrastructure event.
In lieu of its annual Advice-a-Thon, the Edmonton Community Legal Centre (ECLC) has launched an online fundraiser, Tip the Scales to help support its free legal aid programs. Many Albertans depend on ECLC’s programs to access vital legal services and the pandemic has only increased the demand. Click here to learn what access to justice and the ECLC means to the Law Society’s very own Darlene Scott QC.
Jointly presented by the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch, the Distinguished Service Awards recognize outstanding members of Alberta’s legal community for their service to the profession, service to the community, service to legal scholarship and pro bono legal service. The 2021 Distinguished Service Awards are taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at noon, register here. We invite you to attend and celebrate the outstanding members of the legal community being recognized this year:
Service to the Profession – Susan V.R. Billington, QC
Service to the Community – Cyril S. Gurevitch, QC
Legal Scholarship – Professor Steven Penney
Pro Bono Legal Service – D. Jean Munn, QC
An email reminder will be sent out to all registrants around Feb. 9 with details about how to access the webcast. If you have any questions about this event, please email CBA Alberta.
The subject of diversity and inclusion mean different things to different people. When you think about diversity and inclusion, what comes to your mind? Typically, people think about age, race, and gender, however, there is more complexity to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace culture than hiring people who fit into different age brackets or creating the perfect male to female ratio.
Join Kathleen Ryan QC (Partner, DLA Piper & Chair, Diversity & Inclusion Committee – Law Society of Alberta), Afshan Naveed (Partner, Dentons Canada LLP), Cal Johnson QC (Partner, BDP & Member Diversity & Inclusion Committee – Law Society of Alberta), Arman Chak (Bencher, Law Society of Alberta) and Holly Wong (Legal Counsel MNP LLP and President, Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers), from noon – 1 p.m. MST on Feb. 12, 2021 during the International Development Week 2021 as we chat about Diversity & Inclusion.

Over the last 10 years the annual Global Talent Conference was known as one of Edmonton’s premium events for Internationally Educated Professionals who are looking to connect with, and be inspired by, leaders from the Edmonton business community. This year the Edmonton Region Immigrant Employment Council (ERIEC) will co-host the first Alberta Global Talent Conference with our counterpart in Calgary, the Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC), and it will be provided virtually.
This event is open to Internationally Educated Professionals who are Permanent Residents or Canadian Citizens, unemployed or underemployed, as well as to Alberta businesses and community partners.
When: Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021 at 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
For further information, including opportunities for participating as a sponsor and/or exhibitor, please email Elena Chernaeva or call 780.707.8493.

This session will provide an overview of and seek feedback on a recent report, “Community Justice Help: Advancing Community-Based Access to Justice”, released by Community Legal Education Ontario.
Authored by Julie Mathews (CLEO) and David Wiseman (uOttawa), the report proposes a new approach for enabling community workers (as non-lawyers) to provide assistance for law-related problems. The report puts forward a three-part framework for supporting, rather than discouraging, “community justice help”, and in so doing enabling community workers to play a role in advancing access to justice.
Welcoming participants from all provinces, this session will look beyond Ontario to explore the extent to which community justice help is available in other Canadian jurisdictions and the extent to which it is enabled and supported by local regulators both at present and through emerging initiatives.
A report presentation will be followed by participant discussion.
