In recent years, the Alberta courts have provided counsel with helpful guidance for solicitors and litigators practising in condominium law. This webinar explores some of these recent legal developments and considers their practical implications. The cases discussed will include comments on the application of condominium bylaws in relation to legal claims, the different obligations that flow to condominium corporations, the type of evidence that is required where unit owners bring claims of improper conduct, and the validity of caveats in the face of limitation periods.

The Humane Canada’s Justice and Legislative Affairs Program (formerly the Criminal Justice System Reform Program) signature event for prosecutors and those who work with them is the 10th annual Prosecution of Animal Abuse Conference, will be happening online again this year on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th, 2024.

Some of the session speakers and highlights of this year’s conferences include:

• Back-to-back sessions diving into the world of Veterinary Forensics: first with two of Canada’s foremost experts on the subject, Dr. Margaret Doyle and Dr. Shane Bateman, followed by Jace Huggins from US-based National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA);
• Kim Gramlich from Delta Police Victim Services and founder of Justice Facility Dogs Canada will discuss how accredited dogs can support victims in the Canadian Criminal Justice System (CJS);
• Dr. Peter Sandøe, professor of bioethics and director of the Centre for Companion Animal Welfare at the University of Copenhagen, will present the different views on animal ethics found in modern Western societies and how these views influence and are influenced by animal welfare legislation; and
• Canadian Centre for Child Protection’s Monique St. Germain and Debra Danco will will explain the history and evolution of Community Impact Statements, along with considerations in crafting effective statements that are admissible, with tips on what to include (and what not to), as well as some highlights from their latest research into the production of child sexual abuse material in Canada and its correlations to animal sexual abuse.

The Prosecution for Animal Abuse Conference brings together Crown Prosecutors, law enforcement and other allied professionals to share information and resources about animal cruelty and the Violence Link (the relationship between animal abuse and human abuse) in order to ensure that crimes against animals are prosecuted effectively and efficiently.

The Saint Thomas More Lawyers’ Guild of Calgary is pleased to invite all judges, lawyers, paralegals, assistants, clerks and other members of the legal profession and related professions, as well as family and friends, to Calgary’s annual Red Mass, to be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Bishop William McGrattan will preside, with a reception to follow in the St. Mary’s Cathedral Hall.

The featured guest speaker for the reception will be Justice Kevin Feehan of the Alberta Court of Appeal. Justice Feehan was appointed to the Alberta Court of Appeal on Jan. 31, 2019, after sitting as a judge of the Alberta Court of King’s Bench in Edmonton since 2016. Justice Feehan will be speaking about the topic of Faith and the Law.

  The Red Mass is a Mass celebrated in honour of the legal profession as a vocation in the service of justice and the common good. It is an occasion for people employed in the administration of justice as judges, lawyers, paralegals, assistants, civic leaders and law students of all faiths to celebrate the beginning of the new judicial term and ask for blessing, strength, and enlightenment in the pursuit of justice for all.

The tradition of the Red Mass began in the Cathedral of Paris in 1245. The Red Mass was first celebrated in England around 1310, where it is still celebrated annually at Westminster Cathedral. The Red Mass was first celebrated in Canada in 1896, and was re-instituted in Calgary in 2015.

The Mass is free and open to all to attend, including the general public. However, a ticket is required for those members and invited guests who wish to attend the catered reception following the Mass. Each ticket to the reception comes with one complimentary drink ticket.
