2026 Practice Fee Set
The Law Society of Alberta has set the 2026 practice fee at $2,790 per active lawyer and the part-time membership fee will be $1,395. These fees represent an increase of $150 and $75, respectively. The Law Society practice fee is set to ensure that the operational and strategic work is appropriately funded.
For the 2026 budget, the primary increase in the practice fee is to update the Law Society’s infrastructure to a more modern system in order to enhance the organization’s regulatory work and to serve lawyers and the public more efficiently.
Like other organizations, the Law Society must ensure that our system’s infrastructure is kept up to date and that it supports the work required as the regulator. The investment in technology modernization will ensure that the Law Society is operating efficiently, using systems that meet modern standards with an overall goal to improve the user experience for the public and the profession, while supporting system stability, security and longevity.
Payment Options
Invoices for 2026 practice fees will become available in February 2026. Lawyers can pay their fee in one payment or in two instalments. This gives lawyers more flexibility around fee payment if they want to spread their financial obligations through the year rather than paying one lump sum.
If lawyers opt to make instalment payments, the first payment is due on or before March 15, 2026, with the second payment due by Oct. 1, 2026. There will be an additional $50 administrative charge on the March 15 invoice for lawyers who opt to pay their fees in instalments.
Lawyers who pay the fee in one lump sum must do so by March 15, 2026.
