As a participant in Mentor Express, I agree that:

1. In order to be effective as a mentor, lawyers should a) value teaching and counseling new lawyers in the development of professional habits, b) strive to improve the legal profession through their mentorship, and c) possess superior interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate quality discussions about the best practices and highest values of the legal profession. I believe I have these attributes as well as a reputation among judges and peers in the local community for competence and ethical and professional conduct.

2. I have practised for at least five years and have never been suspended for disciplinary reasons, disbarred from the practice of law or resigned in the face of discipline, by any law society or bar association in any jurisdiction. I have no formal disciplinary complaints pending. I will inform the program administrator immediately if any of these have occurred or occur while I am participating in this program.

3. The Law Society of Alberta needs to check my discipline history to confirm that I am eligible to serve as a mentor in its mentorship programs. These checks will include the following:
a. A review of the Law Society of Alberta membership and discipline records.
b. Enquiries with other law societies and bar associations where I am or was previously a member. I authorize those organizations to provide the Law Society of Alberta with full information about my membership including reports they have prepared on my practice, information respecting complaints against my professional conduct, and any disciplinary proceedings taken against me.
In connection with this process, I consent to these verifications.

4. I release and forever discharge the Law Society of Alberta, its staff, and all individuals consulted in connection with these checks, from any and all claims, causes of action, suits, actions and liabilities of every nature and kind whatsoever arising from, as a result of or in any way related to the release of such information or the consideration and assessment of my application to serve as a mentor.

5. Any communications I provide to mentees are solely to provide guidance with their practice of law, and are not intended as legal advice to them or their clients. Mentees are not intended to rely on such communications and are directed to rely on their own professional judgment in conducting their legal practices.

6. Mentoring does not create a privileged relationship between mentor and mentee. Communications with mentees are not protected by solicitor-client privilege. I will nonetheless maintain the strictest confidence about any personal information my mentees share about themselves or past experiences. I will not disclose our discussions without their clear permission. I will keep confidential the identity of any mentees and the existence of the mentoring relationships, and will not disclose either without that mentee's express consent.

7. Mentees in the Mentor Express program may request meetings with me in accordance with their own preferences based on the profile I post for myself on the Mentor Express platform. I understand the Law Society does not match mentors and mentees and that there is no guarantee that I will be matched with a mentee at all.

8. I will make the necessary time commitment to prepare for and meet with my mentees. If I cannot, I will contact the program administrator and my mentees as soon as possible and withdraw from the program.

9. I acknowledge that the information submitted here is complete to the best of my knowledge and that it will be shared with any mentee(s) with whom I may be matched.

10. I agree that in no event will I sue or otherwise attempt to hold liable for damages, the Law Society of Alberta or any other participants in the Law Society's mentorship programs, as a result of my participation in this program.
