Join the Legal Archives Society of Alberta in welcoming its lively guest speaker, the Honourable James Foster, a former Minister of Justice and Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Mr. Foster will recall the events that led to the contentious and transformational change of the Alberta justice system in 1979, from the District Courts and the Supreme Court of Alberta to the Provincial Court, the Court of Queen’s Bench and the Court of
Appeal. It also led to the creation of the Department of the Attorney General, which included a new Medical Examiner system.

Transformation is not always easy. Mr. Foster, the Minister of Justice of the day, will give an insider’s perspective about the support and surprising resistance from judges, lawyers, politicians, police, and journalists.

How did such a transformation happen in the face of considerable opposition from many players in the justice system in Alberta? We invite you to join Legal Archives for the riveting tale of two Courts!
