PREP Subsidy Changing for Fall 2026
The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education’s (CPLED) Board recently approved reducing the PREP tuition by $1,100 to a total of $5,000 (excluding GST). This tuition adjustment is applicable for the Fall 2026 Accelerated intake and onwards. As additional candidates join PREP through the Law Society of BC’s adoption of the program, CPLED can distribute program costs across a larger group, leading to the tuition fee reduction.
Most Alberta articling students are eligible for a subsidy from the Law Society of Alberta toward the PREP tuition fee. The subsidy amount is determined by the Law Society Board (also known as Benchers) and is subject to change.
The Board approved sharing the tuition reduction benefit between students and the Law Society. Effective for the Fall 2026 intake, the Law Society subsidy is changing to $2,050 (excluding GST). While the subsidy amount is being reduced from previous years, the tuition fee after subsidy will be less than it was previously.
Subsidy Details and Eligibility
The subsidy goes directly to the source that paid the PREP tuition fee.
Note: The Law Society is prompted to issue a subsidy once eligible articling students update their articling information using the CPLED Student Portal.
To be eligible for the subsidy, articling students must:
- have been approved by the Law Society to commence articles;
- have paid the entire tuition for PREP, whether by single payment or instalments; and
- not have already received a PREP subsidy from another Law Society.
The PREP subsidy is a one-time payment. Articling students are not eligible for another subsidy if they need to repeat PREP.
If an individual completes PREP without commencing articles, they have three years to be eligible for a retroactive subsidy.
