On this International Day of Democracy, law societies across the country and the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (the Federation) are reaffirming the essential connection between democracy, the rule of law, and an independent legal profession and judiciary. Osler, KC, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Law Society of Alberta, emphasizes that this independence supports transparency, accountability and public confidence in the legal system. As a lawyer, you play an active role in upholding the core principles of the rule of law and representing diverse interests within a system free from interference. 

Upholding the rule of law ensures that Albertans, and all Canadians, have equal access to legal counsel, impartial courts and consistent protection of their rights, regardless of status. While these principles may seem obvious, they are not guaranteed everywhere so today and every day, you are urged to actively safeguard the rule of law for Canadians because it is ours to protect.
