Minimizing risk to the public and to the safety of funds entrusted to lawyers is critical to the work of the Law Society of Alberta. Our Trust Safety program supports lawyers in the proper management of a trust account. To support trust accounting education and awareness, we are offering a free Trust Safety 101 workshop on trust bank account reconciliation.
A reconciliation is the accounting procedure that proves your trust transactions have been recorded accurately. This is a key internal control over the firm’s assets that provides proof that there are sufficient funds in trust. Bank reconciliations enable firms to locate mistakes in the books or bank, track problematic transactions and identify fraud or accounting errors. Reconciliation must occur monthly, regardless of whether there have been any trust transactions in that month.
At this lunch and learn, you will learn how to:
- Prepare a trust bank reconciliation
- Review a completed trust bank reconciliation
- Avoid common trust accounting pitfalls
- Minimize theft from your trust account
In-person lunch and learn workshop. Lunch will be provided.
- Responsible Lawyers (Responsible Lawyers are allowed to bring a guest, such as an assistant or bookkeeper)
