Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association – When the Facts Hide the Pattern: Evidencing Coercive Control
Coercive control is often hidden within hundreds of seemingly unrelated incidents spread across disclosure, correspondence, financial records, witness evidence and court materials. This practical, evidence-focused program through Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association teaches lawyers how to recognize recurring patterns of behaviour, distinguish pattern from incident, and organize behavioural evidence in a way that assists decision-makers. Using real-world examples and interactive exercises, participants will develop practical skills for identifying, analyzing, and presenting evidence of coercive control in legal proceedings.
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Explain the defining characteristics of coercive control and why it is frequently misunderstood within legal proceedings.
- Recognize behavioural patterns that may be consistent with coercive control across a variety of legal contexts.
- Identify common forms of documentary, testimonial, financial, electronic, and collateral evidence that may assist in establishing behavioural patterns.
- Distinguish between isolated incidents and recurring patterns of behaviour.
- Organize complex behavioural evidence into clear, logical, and persuasive case theories. – Identify practical strategies for investigating, analyzing, and presenting behavioural evidence throughout the litigation process
