Farewell to Practice Advisor Ross McLeod
On behalf of the Law Society of Alberta, we want to wish Practice Advisor Ross McLeod all the best and thank him for his dedicated service to the Law Society and the lawyers of Alberta as he retires at the end of May.
Those who have worked or corresponded with Ross over the years know that he is passionate about helping Alberta lawyers. He has fielded thousands of calls and emails for advice during his nearly 15 years as a Practice Advisor. As well, Ross has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Alberta law school and has always been willing to speak at the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), Grant MacEwan University, LESA seminars and law firms.
Ross was called to the Bar in 1975, after graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1974. He practiced in Edmonton for his entire law career, until joining the Law Society in February 2005, working in the Edmonton office. Ross was also a member of the Northwest Territories Bar since 1982, and Nunavut since 2000.
When not on the phone, Ross has focused much of his time on law and legal ethics. He was on the Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s implementation committee when the Model Code was introduced in 2008-09. He has worked with not only the Law Society of Alberta on implementing the Model Code over the years, but he also assisted the law societies in the territories with implementation in their jurisdictions. Ross was instrumental in helping to develop a ‘made in Alberta’ set of conflicts rules that were introduced in 2012 and he participated on the Federation’s staff liaisons group to continually provide feedback to the Federation on potential Model Code amendments.
Many lawyers ask specifically for Ross when they call the Practice Advisor’s office at the Law Society, and he values those relationships. Ross has been a fixture of the Edmonton legal community for many years and is a steady influence, friend and colleague to many throughout Alberta as well. Ross will be missed and again, we wish him all the best for a happy and healthy retirement.
