March 2011 Advisory: About Sole Practitioners & Small Firms

Bencher Recruitment

The Law Society of Alberta is mandated to govern the legal profession in the public interest. Lawyers throughout the province are elected to sit as Benchers to fulfill that mandate. The next Bencher election will be held in November 2011.

The contribution of lawyers to Law Society governance in the public interest is of critical importance to self-regulation. Lawyers from all communities, practice and work areas, firm sizes and geographic locations are encouraged to run for election as Bencher.

Bencher Election Information Sessions

The Law Society will be holding Bencher Election Information Sessions across the province from April through August. The information sessions will be hosted by current and past Benchers of the Law Society. Experienced Benchers will provide insights on the Law Society’s public interest governance mandate and the role of Benchers. Information on the electoral process and running for Bencher will also be provided.

The first information session will be held in Edmonton on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, Wedgewood Room, immediately following a short Annual General Meeting scheduled for 5:00 p.m. to which all members of the profession are welcome. Notice of upcoming Bencher Election Information Sessions in other cities will be provided shortly.
