Instead: Please note that summer recruitment for the first year class 2010-2011 will follow the status quo.

Law Society of Alberta President-Elect Doug Mah, QC, will moderate a panel of 4 speakers at the Law Society’s plenary session at the Alberta Law Conference.

Topics and Panelists include:

  • Leveraging Technology: Nicole Garton-Jones of Heritage Law will discuss her virtual law firm and innovative firm structure aimed at promoting work/life balance, and Ed Gallagher, will discuss how his firm, the Patriot Law Group in Onoway, Alberta, has implemented a flat fee billing system and digital firm platform.
  • Accessing New Markets: J. Roy Nickerson, QC, a partner at Nickerson Roberts Holinski & Mercer in Edmonton will discuss how his firm provides legal services to prepaid legal plan members in Alberta, and Karen Kotansky, Chief Operating Officer of Law Assist Inc. in Ontario will discuss how lawyers can access client referrals through enhanced legal benefit plans.

The Plenary will be held on Thursday, January 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton.

Conference on Human Rights in Canada: New Realities, New Directions

The Alberta Human Rights Commission is hosting the annual conference of the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies in Calgary, Alberta on June 13-15, 2011 at the downtown Westin Hotel.  The conference will include a focus on: Human Rights Law; Resolution and Adjudication; Education and Community Engagement; and Hate and Bias Incidents and Crime. Law Society and CBA to Honour Distinguished Lawyers

On Friday, Jan. 28, four Alberta lawyers will be honoured with Distinguished Service Awards.

The Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association Alberta will present awards to the following:

  • Catherine A. Brown for Distinguished Service in Legal Scholarship 
  • Sir Francis Price, QC for Distinguished Service to the Community 
  • J. Patrick Peacock, QC for Distinguished Service to the Profession 
  • Suzanne M. Alexander-Smith for Distinguished Service in Pro Bono

The 2011 Distinguished Service Awards luncheon will be held on January 28, 2011 at the Alberta Law Conference in the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, AB.

The Law Society and CBA Alberta thanks all those who submitted nominations for these annual awards.
