A brief explanation of each practising status referred to in this directory follows:
Practising: In general, a practising lawyer is entitled to practise law in Alberta without limitation.
Practising (Out of Province) Email the Law Society Membership Group or call (403) 229-4781 (1-800-661-9003 outside of Calgary and in Alberta) and ask for the Membership Group.
Practising (Corporate/Government Counsel): Corporate/Government counsel are entitled to provide legal services to their employer.
Non-practising: A non-practising lawyer may be an active or inactive member who has chosen not to practice law in Alberta for the time being, except as provided for in the National and Territorial Mobility Agreements. Such lawyers are not permitted to open or maintain a trust account.
Suspended: Suspended lawyers are not permitted to practice law or handle trust funds. Lawyers may be suspended for administrative reasons, such as failing to pay their fees or file forms on time. Lawyers may also be suspended for disciplinary reasons, such as being found guilty of conduct deserving of sanction, or pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
Admission Date: The date on which this lawyer was admitted as a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
