About the Law Society

2011 Aboriginal Law Student Summer Employment

The Law Society of Alberta is pleased to facilitate the aboriginal law student summer employment program (the “Program”) for the sixth year. Several law firms in Calgary and Edmonton have indicated an interest in participating in the program.

The purpose of the program is to:

  1. allow law firms and the legal profession to gain greater insight into aboriginal culture and issues;
  2. provide an opportunity for aboriginal law students early in their legal career to obtain work experience in a law firm or organization; and
  3. foster opportunities for ongoing relationships to develop between the aboriginal students and practising lawyers.

Pursuant to the guidelines listed below, all aboriginal law students who wish to participate in the project are invited to apply.

Application Deadlines:

Early Deadline: Please note that law firm application deadlines vary across the country (and could be as early as September 7th, 2010 at some law schools). In order to be considered by participating firms with a November 3rd summer offer date for employment, please submit your applications DIRECTLY to firms by the dates posted at your respective law schools. Not all firms observe this early deadline, so students should consult their Career Services Advisors at their respective law schools for individual firm deadlines.

Regular Deadline: For all other participating firms or organizations, the deadline for submission is December 1, 2010, and applications should be sent to the Law Society of Alberta by that date as outlined below.

Application Process:

To be considered for summer 2011 program, you must: have completed first or second year of law school as of April 2011. Note that there is a different application process for those firms with a November 3rd summer employment offer date.

A) To apply to firms with a November 3rd offer date:

  1. submit a cover letter, a resume and transcripts of marks obtained during undergraduate studies and law school to date directly to the firms you are interested in for their consideration: and
  2. email an application request for the Program to Jocelyn Frazer at least 2 business days prior to the individual firm application deadlines for those firms with early offer dates, indicating which law firms you are interested in for employment during the summer of 2011. To comply with privacy laws, you must provide your written consent to forward your name to the law firms indicated.

For students who have indicated their desire to participate in the Program, an email notification from the Law Society of Alberta will be provided directly to the firms indicated, identifying the respective students as participants in the 2011 Aboriginal Summer Student Program. After this time, the Law Society of Alberta will not have a role in the interview or hiring process, or the employment relationship.

OR

B) To apply to all other firms (deadline December 1, 2010):

  1. submit to the Law Society your application including an application letter, a resume and transcripts of marks obtained during undergraduate studies and law school to date; and
