Law Society Welcomes New Practice Review Lawyer
IN MID-APRIL 2011, the Law Society of Alberta welcomed its first Practice Review staff lawyer, Daniel Chow.
Daniel graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta and is currently a Master of Laws (LLM) candidate at the Osgoode Hall Law School, York University.
He articled with the law firm of Stewart & Company in Edmonton and remained there as an Associate for two years. He then transferred to the law firm of Mintz & Chow as Partner/Counsel.
Since 2006 he has been working as a highly skilled paralegal with McMillan (formerly Lang Michener) in Vancouver and has acted as Counsel to Chiu & Company in Edmonton.
He is currently a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Law Society of British Columbia.
The Practice Review office now consists of Daniel Chow, Practice Review Lawyer; Barbara Cooper, Practice Review Manager; and Merry Rogers, Associate, Practice Review.
The department provides support to the Practice Review Committee in these areas:
- Conducting general reviews and assessments of lawyers who are referred through the complaint process or through the conduct hearing process. The work of the Committee is directed toward making recommendations and imposing conditions on members that will improve the delivery of legal services.
- Deciding whether an application by a lawyer for reinstatement should be granted, declined or granted with conditions, and to determine what those conditions should be, when an application is referred to Practice Review from Membership.
The department also is involved with and supports the Risk Assessment Program by:
- Participating on the Risk Assessment Panel to help identify members who pose a risk, and
- Implementing responses to identified risk by communicating or meeting with members.
Welcome Daniel Chow to the Law Society of Alberta.
