New Bencher also serves as Deputy Mayor of Fort McMurray
A warm welcome is extended to new Bencher Donald Scott of Fort McMurray.
Donald Scott was appointed upon the appointment of Judge John Higgerty to the Provincial Court of Alberta in Edmonton, effective May 16, 2011. The Law Society of Albert thanks Judge John Higgerty for his invaluable contributions and dedication as Bencher to the Law Society of Alberta over the past six years.
Bencher Donald Scott studied at the University of New Brunswick where he obtained his law degree. He then went on to clerk with the New Brunswick Court of Appeal. After completing his articling term, Don attended the University of Cambridge in England where he completed his Masters in Law. He had the opportunity to be a judge for a moot court competition between Oxford and Cambridge. Don remained in England and was the assistant solicitor to the Bloody Sunday Inquiry until returning to Canada in 2000.
Don moved to Fort McMurray in 2000 with his wife Janey after learning of the exciting opportunities available. Don currently owns McMurray Law Office, where he continues with a general practice. He and Janey have 2 beautiful young children, Jeya and Jenna.
Don’s service and commitment to Fort McMurray has been demonstrated through his involvement in various local organizations. He was a board member and former president of the United Way, and is currently serving as a board member for Legal Aid Fort McMurray. He was also recently elected as a council member for the Alberta Division of the Canadian Bar Association. Previously, he has coached soccer and served on the Northern Lights Health Region Ethics Committee.
Don was elected as a municipal councilor in 2010 and he is presently serving as the Deputy Mayor.
In Don’s free time he likes to hike, fly fish and he particularly loves badminton and basketball.
