About the Law Society

Overview

The rule of law is a fundamental cornerstone of our democracy. For the rule of law to stand, the law’s principal actors - judges and practising lawyers, must each be vigorously independent. Lawyers have a duty, within the law, to advance the interests of their clients and to assist the courts in upholding the law. The purpose of independence is the protection of each and every person, affording an independent judiciary and legal profession as a foundation of a free and democratic society. It matters that your lawyer is independent.

The Law Society of Alberta is the self-governing association of all practising lawyers in the province of Alberta. It is financed and maintained by lawyers at no cost to the public or to the government. The mission of the Law Society is to serve the public interest by promoting a high standard of legal services and professional conduct through the governance and regulation of an independent legal profession. Its vision is to be recognized as a model for protecting the public interest and preserving the fundamental principles of justice through a self-regulated, independent and trusted legal profession.

Whether Alberta experiences unprecedented economic growth or recession, the legal profession faces many challenges in meeting the legal needs of Albertans in all walks of life. The Law Society of Alberta has an important role to play in assisting lawyers and the public in meeting those challenges.
