About the Law Society

The Viscount Bennett Scholarship

Supporting Post-Graduate Studies in Common Law

In 1954, Mr. R.B. Bennett, a lawyer with the Law Society of Alberta, gave the Law Society 100 shares of Royal Bank stock, valued at that time at $100 per share. The purpose of the donation was to create a scholarship fund which today is known as the Viscount Bennett Scholarship Fund.

In the early years, the fund was used to provide medals for meritorious students. Now, the value of the shares has increased significantly, and the income generated by the stock enables the Directors to award up to three scholarships annually.

The Right Honourable Viscount Bennett, KC, LLD, DCL, sought to encourage a high standard of legal education, training and excellence. Successful applicants receive up to $20,000 towards post-graduate studies.

Applicants must be law graduates, articling students or lawyers with the Law Society of Alberta, ordinarily resident in or, if not presently resident in, then with an express intention to return to, the province of Alberta. Application details are available at the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta (click here for details). The Viscount Bennett Scholarship Selection Committee determines the annual recipients.

Applications should be provided to the Dean of Law at the University of Alberta. Applications must be postmarked no later then May 1 for the year of the scholarship.
